Deadly Terror Attack, Soldiers Deaths, On Israel’s Day of Mourning

By Stefan J. Bos, Chief International Correspondent Worthy News

JERUSALEM (Worthy News) – Israel’s “National Day of Mourning” over the October 7, 2023, massacre was marred by “a terrorist attack” that reportedly killed one and injured dozens, while the army said six soldiers died after combat in Lebanon and Gaza.

There was no time for Israel to peacefully grieve over the victims of the worst attacks against Jews since the Holocaust, or Shoah, for some 1,200 people killed by Hamas.

For Israel, the day began with emergency services rushing to the scene where a truck rammed into pedestrians at a bus stop in Ramat Hasharon, an affluent city located on Israel’s central coastal strip.

Some 33 people were wounded to various degrees, “with one succumbing to his wounds,” following the attack, said Israeli emergency medical service Magen David Adom (MDA) on Sunday. The driver was detained, officials said.

It was not immediately clear what motivated the driver, but there have been several terror attacks linked to Islamic extremists since the Israel-Hamas war began.

Separately, the army confirmed that five Israeli reservists in the 8207 battalion of the Alon brigade were killed on Saturday in South Lebanon after the force was caught by surprise by three Hezbollah fighters hiding in a building.

Another soldier, who was injured in combat in Gaza earlier this month, also passed away, the army said Sunday.

SOLDIERS NAMED

Those killed in Lebanon were named as Captain Avraham Yosef Goldberg, 43, from Jerusalem; Master Sergeant Gilad Elmaliach, 30, from J; Jerusalem; Captain Amit Chayut, 29, from Haifa; and Major Eliav Amram Abitbol, 36, from Eitan.

Later, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Sergeant Major Shaul Moyal, 47, from Karnei Shomron, was also killed in the incident while serving in the 8207 reservist battalion.

Also on Sunday, the IDF announced the death of Staff Sergeant Malachi Yehuda Harari, 22, from Even Shmuel, who died from wounds while fighting Hamas in north Gaza.

Four soldiers and an officer were severely wounded in the incident that killed the five, and nine others were lightly and moderately wounded, the IDF explained.

Their deaths came amid mounting concern about the mounting death toll of Israeli troops as the nation fights at numerous fronts.

By late Sunday, at least 771 Israeli soldiers were known to have been killed, including 360 inside the Gaza Strip, since Hamas’ deadly attacks on the Jewish nation country on October 7, 2023.
