16 Christians Slaughtered in Southern Nigeria

by Karen Faulkner, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – As entrenched Islamic jihadism expands from northern Nigeria down the country, 16 Pentecostal Christians were murdered and homes set on fire during an attack by suspected Fulani militant herdsmen in southern Nigeria’s Ebonyi state on Sunday, International Christian Concern (ICC) reports.

With more Christians killed in Nigeria than in the rest of the world combined, the country ranks 7 on the Open Doors World Watch List 2025 of the top 50 countries where Christians are persecuted.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 2, gunmen raided a village which is home to members of the The Lord Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministry, and shot 16 people dead. “Local sources reported that the attack occurred after several days of threats were made following accusations that villagers had killed cattle belonging to the Fulani herders,” ICC said.

Calling for calm, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru condemned the attack and said security forces had been deployed to search out the killers.
“Our people are hospitable, but strangers should not take advantage of their calmness,” he said in a statement.

Tens of thousands of Christians have been murdered by Islamic extremists intent on establishing a Caliphate in Nigeria since 2009, but next to nothing has been done on a national or international level to stem the flow of death and contingent destruction.

ICC reports that Amnesty International has issued a statement calling on the Nigerian government to take action. Meanwhile, no arrests have been made in regard to Sunday’s massacre.
