Russian Drones Hit Ukrainian Kindergarten Despite Ceasefire Claims (Worthy News)

KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Russian Shahed drones struck a kindergarten in Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast despite a Kyiv-declared ceasefire, killing at least one person, witnesses and officials said Thursday.

Rescuers were seen rushing to the scene on May 6 to search beneath the rubble, according to footage reviewed by Worthy News.

Officials later confirmed that a woman working as a security guard at the kindergarten was killed in the attack.

No children were present at the time of the strike, but the incident underscored continuing fears over civilian safety more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

CEASEFIRE UNDER PRESSURE

Witnesses said two drones hit the kindergarten.

The strike came despite Ukraine announcing a ceasefire Wednesday, with Ukraine’s foreign minister accusing Moscow of “violating” the truce “unilaterally.”

Moscow had earlier announced its own ceasefire for May 8–9 ahead of Russia’s annual Victory Parade in Moscow commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

For the first time in years, the parade is not expected to feature major military hardware such as tanks or missile systems amid fears of possible Ukrainian attacks.

DRONE WAR ESCALATES

The concerns follow a series of Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside Russia, including reported attacks on targets in Moscow, one of the world’s most heavily protected capitals.

The continuing exchanges of drone and missile attacks have highlighted the fragile nature of ceasefire efforts and the difficulty of securing civilian areas far from the front lines.

The war, now in its fifth year, has killed thousands of civilians and forced millions from their homes while devastating large parts of Ukraine’s infrastructure.
