Russian Drone Hits Romanian Appartment Building, Several Injured (Worthy News Radio)

BUCHAREST/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Romanian authorities say a Russian drone struck an apartment building in eastern Romania, causing a fire and injuring two people, prompting condemnation from the NATO military alliance and the European Union.

Firefighters and emergency crews rushed to the scene Friday in the eastern city of Galați, near Romania’s border with Ukraine.

Romania’s emergency situations authority said the drone’s entire explosive payload detonated, sparking a fire on the 10th floor of the residential building.

Two people suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Galați County Emergency Clinical Hospital for treatment.

About 70 residents were evacuated before firefighters brought the blaze under control.

NATO, EU CONDEMN STRIKE

Just across the border lies a major Ukrainian port that was also reportedly targeted by Russian forces.

The incident prompted swift reactions from NATO and the European Union.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said Russia’s “reckless behaviour is a danger to us all.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Moscow’s “war of aggression has crossed yet another line.”

Russian drones have crossed into Romanian territory several times during the more than four-year war in Ukraine. However, this is believed to be the first time Romanian civilians have been injured.

CONCERNS OVER WIDER WAR

The incident has heightened concerns that the conflict could spill beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Romania is a member of NATO, whose Article Five collective defense clause states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.
